Edith Hope was born into the Blogosphere on a wintry January afternoon. Template tweaked, dashboard dusted and a suitably snowy scene scanned, her first posting was polished then pinged.
As an infant of the new technologies, EH had little grasp of Netiquette and struggled to acquire the necessary Blargon to join the Commentariat. Alone in her Blogspot, she had no Google friends, no Favourites and no Fans. Then Jodi came to the rescue and urged Blotanical A-Listers to support baby bloggers in taking their first steps.
RO became her first Follower. Helen, ever patient, was on hand with advice whilst Anna taught the alphabet on Wednesdays and Deborah tirelessly nurtured the fledgling EH through the Blogssary of on-line acronyms and emoticons. Even at this early stage, that shady, and ever more so, character, Teza, introduced EH to the delights of the Sidebar where she was launched into the Society of Bloggers in a scene reminiscent of the erstwhile debutantes at Queen Charlotte's Ball.
Carol was to be a role model for the young EH's weblog education, schooling her in the art of weaving elegant text with stunning photography and stressing the importance of showing a lively interest in the weblogs of others as well as paying attention to one's own. Isobel and Eileen provided horticultural training, Diana of EE taught fine linking, analysis of sitemeter readings and traffic surveys, Domestic Science was in the very capable hands of Leslie, Drama with MsS, Rural Studies with Clare and Randy, Creative Writing with Jeanne and Current Affairs with Paul. And, after a busy day at the keyboard, EH was soothed to sleep with bedtime stories from Pamela, Sarah and Charlotte.
But, for the adolescent EH, weblogging was not to be all work and no play. Fun was always to be had with Katy Noelle and Amy, Gary could be relied upon for tea break company at any hour of the night or day and the hot, loud and proud crowd of Noel, Florida Girl and Kimberly was always game for a Blogger Bash, hosted by the expert Vlogger, Kyna.
Salad days were spent strolling down the Lade with Rosie, up the garden path with Catherine, and into the woods with Deb to read Catmint's diary. Once the age of majority had been reached, EH took wine trips with Alice, shared plant collecting adventures with Barry and sampled the nightlife of Manhattan with Elizabeth.
Approaching maturity, EH needed to put her house in order. And who better to call upon than the Blognoscenti of interior decoration Jacqueline, Madelief and Kerry? Paint colours, vintage chic and crocheted pebble covers - these three Muses of design covered it all. And for that extra style, then no-one better than Mette from Helsinki and Janet from California. Dinner parties for the Blogerati became the order of the day. Prepared and beautifully presented by Joey, using only the freshest of ingredients grown with tender care by Diana, these Blogorific virtual feasts drew an international Blaudience. The witty and pretty Britta, the New York socialite and Blogebrity, Reginald Darling, the highly amusing Gary aka G, the mysterious and well travelled Russian, Tatyana and, of course, the Blogostar of Blogostars, Willow, were all regular diners.
But all was not well. A Blogostorm was raging in EH's Google Reader. Her Blogroll was lengthening at an alarming rate. Hitnosis and Blogorrhoea were setting in. Was the aging EH in danger of becoming a Blogoholic? And other perils were emerging on the dark side of the Blogosphere. IG, posing as an English vegetable virgin, was really an Irish Cordon Bleu cook, Doppelbloggers had plagiarised Tiggerlot and Autumn Belle, Blurkers were silently stalking and tan hummocks had infilitrated the otherwise peerless designs of Robert and Lesley. And who was the enigmatic Hungarian Eszter with her fluent English?
And yet the dowager EH has survived to celebrate her 50th. posting. Cassandra's gift was the honour of a Charm Award, but just how was it to be fixed to the Sidebar?
P.S. Today's picture, in celebration of a 50th. posting, is of some of the debutantes of 1950 in Presentation gowns.
P.P.S. Edith Hope extends her best wishes to all of her many Followers and Friends on this auspicious occasion. Normal postings will be resumed in due course.

What a wonderful journey your blog provides and all the blog friends you have made. It is a treat to read your blog. I look forward to the next 50 posts.
Great post Edith. That was fun.
Congratulations on your 50th!
As an anniversary gift, I shall inform you that when you post links (as you have throughout the posting), they replace your weblog with that of another. To avoid this, you need to insert your cursor after the text link but before the closing angular bracket ... blahblahblah.blogspot.com"HERE>, insert a space, and then type target="_blank"
This will ensure that the link opens in a new window, meaning that the reader can then return to your page unmolested!
Once more, congratulations!
Congratulations on your 50th, Edith! I would have guessed you were a long-time blogging veteran. I thoroughly enjoyed this clever post.
(You've been redecorating! Classy.)
Aren't you lovely and generous for providing so many links?
Congratulations on number 50 - your blog doesn't look a day over 29 posts. ;)
Such a charming post in celebration of your 50th! So very happy to have found you! And I wish you a lovely "birthday"!!
Ah vintage Edith Hope! Will come back to revel in all your newly coined words for us!! ;>)Have almost forgotten the blogosphere Before EH ... but what we wonder does The Lady look like?
Oh Edith, what a wonderful creative posting for your 50th! Those dresses remind me of my high school prom days. Many best wishes and many more postings for us all!
Eileen
Happy 50th, EH! Quite an amusing wrap-up there of your blogworld experiences. Your blog has aged gracefully, I must say. I think mine must be the same age in time (born Jan 2010), but dear me, I'm pushing the 200th post mark and somehow it feels mine is not quite as refined and mature... No dinner parties yet for this blogger.
Dear Sherlock Street, Thank you for your comment. I too look forward to the next 50!!
Dear RG, Thank you for your comment. I am pleased that you found it fun. That was my intention!
Dear IG, Thank you for your comment and your most helpful technological input. It is a source of amazement to me that I have reached this point and can even provide a link at all!!
Dear Willow, Thank you for your comment and compliment on the 'facelift'. My blogging education is still, I fear, far from complete.

Dear Diana of EE, Thank you for your comment. After all your painstaking teaching, I am ashamed that I have not yet perfected the link to your weblog. I shall attempt to alter this.
The enigmatic and mysterious Edith....to reveal her is to spoil the fun I fear!
Dear Eileen, Thank you so much for your kind comment. Yes, those prom dresses - all skirt and no waist. Those were the days!
Dear Edith,
What a delightful post! It must have taken you a long time.

Dear FG, Thank you for your comment. Variety is the spice of life and so it is with the Blogosphere. I love the many different weblogs that abound and the personalities of their writers. That is what makes the bloging experience, including weblogs such as yours, so interesting.
Many congratulations on your 50th! What a learning curve you've had since January.
I loved the sentence, "Hitnosis and Blogorrhoea were setting in." I've been there, done that and am probably still suffering from it!
Dear Madelief, Thank you so much for your kind comment. I so enjoy our virtual meetings and have learned so much from you. I look forward to many more weblog encounters!
Dear Ingrid, Thank you so much for your kind comment and good wishes.

Nobody does it better
Here's to the next 50!
Dearest Isobel, Thank you so much for your kind comment. Meeting wonderful webloggers such as you makes it all worthwhile and spurs me on!
Conratulations on your 50th posting Edith!
I see you wearing a long gown of white silk shantung shoulders bared, a loosely woven shawl that has an ethereal quality and a stunning strand of very ample pearls in creamy white...and your dance card is full.
Enjoy the festivities...
Dear Hostess, Thank you so much for your kind and amusing comment. Your perception is so very apt. Practice has ensured that my curtsies are now perfect!
Dear Dear Edith! Best Wishes on this major marking of your coming out . . . Your 50th is stellar!! You are so delightfully witty and a wizard with words and your choice of images always a joy. I am so honored to be listed here among your blogoholic friends. A truly wonderful post . . . clever and hilarious!! Your blog is truly unique in our blogosphere.
What a wonderful and fun posting Edith.Oh my, those dresses remind me of the flouncy dresses and net petticoats of my prom. LOL! Congratulations on your 50th posting and may you post many more.
Dearest Carol, Thank you so very much for your very kind comment. I truly think of you as a mentor, although I fail miserably on the photography. You are always so generous with your praise that I am delighted that you consider me a 'virtual friend'!!
Dear Lona, Thank you for your generous comment. Ah yes, the net petticoats......scratchy, difficult to control and impossible to sit down in. What we women do for fashion!!
How enjoyable to learn of the historic origins of our esteemed EH's entry in to the blogosphere. I look forward to continuing this journey with you.
Dear Terra, Thank you for your comment. I too look forward to continuing the journey with such interesting travelling companions such as you.
hi dearest edith,
thank you for the lovely mention on your lovely blog. i will try to make it over to some of your fellow blogger friends. already went and paid a visit to reggie darling and i think i'm in love.
congratulations on 50 posts.
~janet
Dear Edith,
Congratulations! You were very kind to include so many of your followers in this post.
I was interested to see that you categorize me as a plant collector ( which undeniably I am). But this makes me realize that my posts have been too reliant on the micro lens on my camera and perhaps have lost touch with the bigger picture.
Not sure if this was intentional on your part, but I will try in future to show my world through a longer shot... maybe even an extreme long shot?
Dear Edith, congratulations, your fame is well-deserved and your writing is superb...
Dear Janet, Thank you so much for your comment. I am so pleased that you have already found a new friend. There are so many wonderful weblogs out there to discover!
Dear Barry, Thank you so much for your comment. Oh, I do so hope that you will not change a thing.....I love your weblog just as it is. However, longer shots would be delicious from time to time!
Dear Michael, Thank you so much for your very generous comment. I am very fortunate to have met such charming fellow webloggers such as you.
Wonderful post, "Congratulations" on your milestone. Hope there are many more to come. Take care:)
Dear Jennifer, Thank you for your kind comment. I shall never be short of topics that is for sure, but I shall soon have to invent the 25th hour in the day to deal with everything!
Holytoot! Only 50??? With your poise, graciousness, wit and skill, I thought that you weren't a day under 100! =0 (WELL!!! THIS is the only place that I know of where these words would be a compliment.)
Dearest Edith, I am so glad that I've had the privilege of you passing into the little circle of my life and personal experience. That's what it is - a privilege to know you! I am rich for it! You, yourself are enigmatic and, yet, so very warm and real. It's brilliant! It's just pure joy for us to experience both your musings and the sharply intelligent and unique way that you share them. I think that others have said it better than I am doing, now, but I'm glad to have a chance to tell you, myself!
With love,
Katy
Dearest Katy, Holytoot indeed!! Thank you so much for your kind and generous comment. It has been such fun getting to know you and so many other wonderful people in the Blogosphere.
In some ways I am amazed that I have reached 50, since, in spite of appearances, feel that I must at least have reached 100 or 1000!!
Dear Edith, congratulations on your 50th post! I always enjoy your commentary, and this one is excellent. I am still muddying through the technology stuff. I read IGs advice above, and I confess I can't figure it out. I will have to watch your blog to see how you do it!
I may be a "Jonnie come late to the party" but here's wishing you a happy day!
Congratulations! What a thorough post to celebrate an important milestone in the evolution of your informative blog.
(I tried to follow the Idiot Gardener's instructions - and couldn't figure them out. Suffice it for me that if I follow a link OUT of YOUR blog, I can quickly return by simply clicking on the < arrow at the very TOP of the screen. Much easier and less confusing for old folks like me!)
Congratulations, Ms Hope.
May your next fifty be as charming and prettily wittily (yes,I'm a poet and I know it....) as your first.
Sarahx
Edith, I wish you could have seen me sitting here reading this with an asinine grin on my face, marvelling at your way with words and all of these incredible links (and I am truly honoured to be one...thank you!). You do realise of course that it will take me a month of Sundays to go and check them all out don't you? Who will look after poor Buffy I wonder while I neglect her for the wonders of your link list?! And how will I find the time to crochet another pebble cover..oh well, I guess something's got to give. Bad luck vampire slayer. Joking!!
Congratulations, Edith! I've enjoyed your blog so much - I hope you get as much fun out of the next 50 posts as I have reading the first 50.
Best wishes, Victoria
Only 50? I somehow thought you had always been here and I mean this in the most admiring way. It's a bit like meeting a supermodel. You think they are fabulous but you think they were always fabulous, you can't imagine that they ever practised walking in their heels.
Dear Edith, what a fun post! So happy to help with the rural studies :P I can't believe this is only your 50th post! Really? Are you sure you didn't miscount? Very worthy of celebration though. I love your witty, intelligent posts. It is remarkable how our blogs, after such a short time, can seem to take on a life of their own! Like you I seem to be following so many wonderful and entertaining blogs in the blogosphere, I could use a few extra hours a day just to keep up!
Oh Edith - your post was just the perfect tonic for me tonight and bought a much needed smile to my face. So glad as are many others that you decided to ping back in January. Many congratulations on your 50th post and here's to many more!
Dear Edith,
Congratulations and thank YOU for the 50. I always look forward to your posts and discovering what the topic will be...The Naked Truth of Gardening South of the Thames,Name Dropping, or a photo of Dame Edna Everage. Whatever the topic, you add so much to the blogosphere and I love your writing, knowledge and wit. Your comments are always sincere and appreciated. All in all...you are a great blogging friend, Edith. Here is to many more posts!
Edith,
On my completion of reading this post I had the feeling of being a most fortunate invited guest at a lavish international gala. Our gracious Hostess ascending a sweeping mirrored stairway to address the stellar gathering from a crystalline podium with an oratorical performance that even countryman Will Shakespeare would have been envious of. This is truly a reich and wonderful way to celebrate a blogging milestone. The only thing I missed in this posting was the sound of roaring applause and the popping of champagne corks.
Edith, your posts are not unlike little magic carpets that whisk the reader away to places that some will never be able to visit or relate an event we would never be able to live. With each post you broaden our knowledge of the world with wit and charm that is uniquely Edith. Thank you for sharing your insights that give one reason to pause and consider the variety life has to offer in all things.
I look forward to the next 50 and more. - G
Only 50? You seem far more seasoned, dear Edith--one of the grand dames. And kudos on working in all the names! There should be a special blog award for that!
Congratulations!
50 posts! Congratulations, Edith. I hope I haven't missed any as I enjoy each of them tremendously. It is always a pleasure to see a new "EH" post in my dashboard.
As always, this one was a delight to read as well. Looking forward to the next 50. :)
Dear Deborah, Thank you for your kind comment. I fear that working out how to be clever with the links may well take me up to the 100th posting!
Dear meredhuit, Thank you for your comment. We may have met only recently, but I look forward to our partying together well into the future!
Dear Rebecca, Thank you so much for your comment. Yes, dear IG. He may have trouble with his courgettes but he is a wizard with the technology!!
Dear Sarah, Thank you so much for your generous comment. Although we have only been introduced recently, I am looking forward to revamping my 'old country style' with your thorughly modern ideas!!
Dear Kerry, Thank you so much for your very kind comment. It is always such fun to visit your weblog. How you will 'top' the crocheted pebble covers I know not....but 'top' them you undoubtedly will!!
My love to Buffy.
Dear Victoria, Thank you so much for your kind comment. I am delighted that you have enjoyed reading my postings and hope that I can continue to write things of interest.
Dear Elizabeth, Thank you so very much for your generous comment. I have had to learn a great deal to get to this point and I am always conscious that there is so much that I still do not know or understand in the world of weblogging. Still, that is the fun of it!!
Dear Clare, Thank you for your comment. I have learned so much from you about life on a working farm that I thought you would be the most perfect Rural Studies teacher that anyone could have.
As you say, the Blogosphere appears to be infinite so keeping up is a permanent struggle!
Dear Anna, Thank you for your comment. I am so pleased that it made you smile and do so hope that you are managing to keep cheerful with the most difficult times you are experiencing at present.
Dear Amy, Thank you so much for your comment and your unfailing support which I appreciate so much.
I am pleased that you found the posting fun since that was my intention and to highlight the wonderful friendship I have experienced from so many fellow webloggers.
Dearest G, Thank you so much for your very kind and most generous comment.
You are too kind, but I love the thought of descending such a staircase to the accompaniment of popping champagne corks. I cannot, however, imagine such an occasion without your sparkling humour and naughtiness. You must dust off the tuxedo and I must polish the tiara for one day......
Dear Charlotte, Thank you so much for your comment. I am so pleased that our paths have now crossed and I too look forward to many more of your stories from the Nightbook!
Dear Ms S, Thank you for your most kind comment. You have been such a faithful follower from my very earliest days. I appreciate that very much and trust that I shall continue to write things of interest.
Congratulations Edith. Here's wishing you many many more Happy Blogging days ahead...Radhika
Ps: Its been such a pleasure to visit your blog and read your lovely posts.
Dear Radhika, Thank you so much for your comments and especially for your good wishes and kind thoughts. It has all, indeed, been such fun!
Dear EH, what a wonderfully enjoyable post to read. You have developed so much in your 50 posts, you have gone from being a naive infant blogger to a hugely popular and influential A-lister yourself. And you provide us with an excellent model of warm, considerate Netiquette. It's a strange world, the blogosphere, I congratulate on your 50th posting, and I am sure the blogostorms will only provide you with more inspiration for posts. cheers, catmint
What words you have coined! --"Blurkers" strikes me as a particularly fine one...
How flattered I am to appear on your list
You are a fine addition to Blogland with your wit and splendid responses to others; comments.
I would I were so patient!
Your 50th posting!
you have made such an impact already.
Congratulations and thank you for the mention. I love your posts and particularly your photos. I imagine you rummaging through shoe boxes trying to find a suitable photo for your post.
Only 50! You write with the wit and authority of a blog so much older and wiser. Congratulations on reaching this milestone!
Dear Edith Hope,
congratulation to your 50th! And the beautiful picture linked to it, and the list of your adventures and followers in blogland! Thank you for your witty and informative posts, I find always joy+education, which is a blessed mixture! Looking out for the next jubilee Britta
Dear Edith
I'm on holiday just now and have been taking a little break from blogsphere land but had to come over and congratulate you on your 50th post. I have been blogging for a year and I have learned so much and had such great fun aswell.
I've really enjoyed visiting you here over the past year and I hope you enjoy writing your next set of 50 posts.
Dear Catmint, Thank you so much for your kind and generous comment. The Blogosphere is indeed a strange place, quite different from anywhere else I have ever known. But, as you say, it provides endless entertainment and ideas - far more than can ever be used in a weblogging lifetime!!
Dear Elizabeth, Thank you for your comment. Alas, the word 'Blurker' is not my own. In researching for this posting I found a glossary of weblog terms and that was amongst them. I loved it too!!
Dear Helen, Thank you for your comment. I am pleased that you like the photographs. You are not so far off the mark with my endless search for a suitable [ or indeed unsuitable] image to accompany each posting. I keep telling myself that it would be too easy to just have a camera!
Dear Jennifer, Thank you so much for your kind comment. Yes, 50 already and aging fast!
Dear Britta, Thank you for your generous comment. I take it as a great compliment that you find fun as well as something to think about in what I write since your own postings are always so erudite. Long may we both continue!
Dear Rosie, Thank you so much for your comment. How kind of you to take a break from your holiday to send your good wishes. Your support since my early days is very much appreciated.
Brilliant! I believe EH has defintely graduated :-)

Congratulations. Your blog is consistently enjoyable, and you serve as a role model to many of us "younger" bloggers.
Dear Adrian, Thank you so much for your comment. Sometimes I feel that I am a newcomer myself but at others I feel quite middle aged!!
It warms my heart to see that friendships can bloom with the blog and that at the very least we all make new pen pals. I have many posts to catch up on still but I also look forward to the ones still to come. Felicitations and congratulations on the 50th posting. -Patty

My dear Edith,
You have truly outdone yourself with this, your gloriously generous, stirringly enlightening, ever entertaining... 50th post.
(Now, my only question: Is there actually a way to incorporate IG's advice on blogger if one is not used to using code:( )
Congratulations! Know that I am raising a glass of very fine Cabernet Sauvignon to you, wishing that I could pour one for you, as well.
Dear Edith - what a terrific and fun post! And congrats on the 50th - that's quite an accomplishment! Keep them coming!

I found your posting on all things stuffed most entertaining and was most intrigued to see that what I have lived with all my life has suddenly come into the forefront of fashion!! I rely upon you to keep me informed of these things.
Dear Alice, Thank you for your most kind comment. I have read and reread IG's comment and still have no idea how to do the clever linking. I regard it as one of the wonders of the world that I managed what I did!!

Edith, what a witty and wonderful post. I couldn't stop laughing at all the blogology. I can't decide between Blogorrhoea and Blognoscenti as my favorite new terms. Here's to your next 50!
Dear Barbara, Thank you so much for your very kind and encouraging comment. I am delighted that you found in the posting something to laugh at. Life should never be too serious!
Speaking of a most creative and delightful post!! ;>)... dear Edith, you write and entertain so beautifully. Thank you for allowing us to be a part of your 50th celebration! I am honored.
Dear Diana, Thank you so much for your very kind and generous comment. The blogosphere has introduced me to so very many truly delightful people, such as yourself, as well as giving me an insight into so much of interest and great worth.
Congratulations! I have so enjoyed reading your posts & look forward to the next 50, at least!
How gracious of you to remember everyone who was helpful in such an amusing way. You write so beautifully.
Dear Sandra, Thank you for your coment and kind wishes. I am pleased that you found the posting amusing as that was exactly my intention.
Reggie is pleased beyond belief to have been included in such vaunted company, and honored to be mentioned by such a member of the firmament as Ms. Edith Hope. He adores your blog, and looks forward to each an every missive you bless your readers with. RD
Dear Reggie, Thank you so much for your kind and most generous comment. Although our paths have only recently crossed, I feel sure that we shall enjoy each other's company in the Blogosphere for some time to come.
Brilliant Edith! Inspiring for those of us struggling to get going...
Dear Tim, Thank you for your comment. Oh, I do so hope that you keep posting since you have such interesting projects and ideas to share.
Oh! My!
What a list and interesting. Having posted over 500 times now it is interesting to see who is still around and who has dropped off the scene.
With 148 comments, I doubt mine will be seen, but you were very lucky or very well liked and respected to have so many wonderful mentors to help in your entry into blogging. I have been muddling along and can only hope to one day be a seasoned blogger. Still so much to learn. I don't even have a clue what a Google Reader is, let alone have a Blogostorm in it.
Dear Barbara, Thank you for your comment. 500 postings.....what stamina. I am sure that you have outlasted many of your contemporaries!
Dear GWGT, Thank you for your comment, which of course has been noted and welcomed! Of all the things I have learned along the way, the Google reader as a means of organising the weblogs one reads is, perhaps the best. Just sign up for a Google account, follow and the rest will happen automatically!!
Thank-you Edith. I can now count you as a mentor.
Dear GWGT, Welcome back. I am pleased to be of assistance, but cannot believe that I have reached the dizzy heights of 'Weblog Mentor'!!
I was seriously thinking about this today as I was posting another writing. We start off as anonymous and as time goes, it turns into something more...an authority of our realm wherever we may be. I don't know if you feel this way as well....but sometimes when fellow bloggers don't show up on the dashboard, you worry and wonder if everything is alright. Or did they end their blogging endevours? etc. This has been an exciting adventure and a wonderful way to connect with the international community of gardeners.
Dear Rohrerbot, Thank you for your comment. You are so right in that after a while one's 'virtual' friends do become very real and dear to one's heart. I have enjoyed such wonderful support from the international Blogosphere and wanted to celebrate this in my 50th posting.
